4 Ways Your Physical Health Can Impact Your Golf Game

Posted by Dr. Scott Wilson | 01-Jul-2016

Golf requires athletes to have adequate core strength and flexibility to perform at their very best. But there’s much more to staying healthy, and knowing how to stay in shape can improve your performance on the golf course.

The following are 4 ways your physical health can impact your golf game. Knowing what strategies to put in place will ensure that your game continues to improve and that you avoid many common injuries.

  1. Cardiovascular Fitness
Although golf may not appear to be a sport that requires high levels of cardiovascular fitness, proper aerobic conditioning can contribute to your golf game.
Aerobic fitness improves overall fitness and performance while reducing the discomfort that many deconditioned golfers often experience.
There are many ways to improve your cardiovascular fitness level. Activities that are low-impact are usually preferred to avoid stressing the joints and back. Stationary biking or swimming are great ways to improve your aerobic capacity and see continued gains on the golf course.
  2. Increasing Flexibility
Tightness in the leg, back, and shoulder muscles has a negative impact on your golf game. A properly designed and executed stretching program is essential to your performance in golf.
By identifying the muscles that need to be stretched and learning how to properly stretch them, you can dramatically improve your golf game with minimal effort.
If you are currently experiencing low back or shoulder pain, stretching can help alleviate these and other symptoms.
  3. Restoring Muscle Balance
No muscle works in isolation. Muscles work in concert with each other to create movement. When muscles are balanced in strength, length, and tension, they allow the joints of the body to move in an optimal range of motion.
When muscles become imbalanced, the integrity of the movements is compromised. This leads to increased tension in connective tissues as well as a decrease in performance.
Muscles that are chronically short and tight become overactive. This can cause its antagonist (opposing) muscle to become inhibited. Identifying and correcting muscle imbalances are the keys to improving your golf game and preventing injuries
  4. Nutrition
Nutrition is one of the most important components to high-performance in any sport. Yet many golfers overlook the value of a healthy diet as it relates to their golf game.
Getting adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates and high-quality proteins provide the fuel you need to perform at your best in golf.
Hydration is also essential to your golf game. It allows the muscles to absorb the nutrients from food while keeping your energy levels up. Proper nutrition and hydration help to regulate your blood sugar, which improves your ability to focus and avoid fatigue.

These 4 ways your physical health can impact your golf game are important to consider. Getting the proper nutrition and maintaining optimal physical health and muscle balance will improve your game, prevent injuries, and support your long-term health.
