Benefits of Juicing

Posted by Dr. Scott Wilson | 09-Jul-2018

Juicing seems to be one of those health trends that isn’t fading away into the background any time soon. From social media influencers showing off their juicing skills in an Instagram video, to your boss drinking green juice on their way into the office, it seems like everyone’s participating in this trend.

So, the question is: what are the benefits of juicing? Is it actually a healthy habit, or just a fad that will be uncovered to have no true value? You may be wondering about these things if you’re on the cusp of joining the juicing trend, but before you go out and buy that expensive blender, you should take note of its benefits to see if it’ll truly be of value to you.

Take a look at some of the main benefits of juicing.

Nutrients

This might be a given, but juicing helps you pack more nutrients into your diet. It can be difficult to achieve the recommended intake of fruits and vegetables every day, but juicing can make it a little easier. When making juice, people will often pack in an array of fruits and vegetables — usually equivalent to 2-3 pounds.

However, the pure volume of fruits and vegetables isn’t the main thing that provides the nutrients. Since the juicing process involves extracting juice and leaving off the pulp, nutrients can be directly absorbed into your bloodstream. This means that not only will you get your daily dose of greens, but you’ll be able to get all of the nutrients that come with it.

Increased Vegetable Consumption

As we’ve mentioned, it can be tough to fit all of your fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. Some people manage to do this by cooking their own meals, meal prepping, and preparing snacks to consume throughout their day. However, not everyone has the time and motivation it takes to do this.

Juicing cuts out the middleman of having to prep your fruits and vegetables individually to be cooked, and allows you to consume all of them at once. Plus, it makes it a lot easier to take in those vegetables that you’re not the biggest fan of. For example, many people want to eat kale because of its nutritional value but just can’t get behind the taste. When you’re juicing, it becomes easy to mask the taste of vegetables like kale with other fruits and vegetables that are a little tastier.

Good Bacteria for Your Gut

Since our immune systems are located in our digestive tract, the key to a healthy body is a healthy gut — and the key to a healthy gut is good bacteria. Studies have found that eating foods rich in prebiotics can increase the good bacteria in your gut by 133 million. Prebiotic-rich foods include broccoli cabbage, kale, leeks, and bananas.

Other vegetables that you can include in your juicing regimen include light green, dark green, and yellow coloured vegetables — these contain carotene, Vitamin C, E, and folate. By juicing, you can ensure that you get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables to maintain your digestive health.

Lower Cholesterol

If you’re looking for ways to keep your cholesterol under control, then juicing is definitely a step in the right direction. Consuming capscium, dark greens, cucumber, ginger, celery, bitter melon, and lemon can help lower your cholesterol.

While these fruits contribute to a healthier diet, you shouldn’t depend on them solely to lower your cholesterol; you’ll have to make some other changes if you want these greens to make a difference. For example, you can’t binge on fried food one day and expect to make up the next day with a green smoothie. Consuming these vegetables should be paired with a healthy diet, free of saturated fats.

Detox

Whether you lead an active and healthy lifestyle already or could use some help getting started, a detox can help you put your best foot forward. Many of us lead slower paced lifestyles, sitting behind screens for most of the workday and then doing the same thing once we get home. To kickstart your new healthy regime or to give your current one a boost, consider a juice detox.

The goal of a juice fast is to rest your digestive system and replenish it with the nutrients from vegetable-packed juices. Once you complete a juice fast and feel the results, you’ll be motivated to keep within those healthy habits. However, before beginning a juice fast you should always consult your doctor.

Better Skin

Who doesn’t want better skin? If you’ve ever heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” then you know where we’re going with this one. If you’re constantly eating high-fat and high-sugar foods, then your skin will reflect that. Juicing will allow you to incorporate a ton of fresh vegetables into your diet, and brighten your complexion. If you’ve been struggling with problem skin and just can’t seem to find the root of the problem, try switching up your diet to include some fruit and vegetable-packed juices — you’re bound to see an improvement.

There are a number of health-related benefits to juicing. While it may seem like a trend right now, there’s definitely evidence to prove that there’s a reason that juicing is as popular as it is.
