Self-care Tips For This Summer

For some, self-care means spending time with family and friends, going to parties, and socializing. For others, it could mean spending a quiet night in with some wine and a good dinner. Self-care depends wholly on the individual, and the ways in which they find the most relaxation.

It’s important to take some time out for yourself on a regular basis to avoid overextending yourself and burning out. Many people juggle balancing a career and personal life, and can often forget to tend to their own needs in the flurry of all that’s going on around them.

This summer, make an effort to take some time out for self-care. You may be wondering how you’ll be able to fit some ‘me time’ into your schedule, but self-care doesn’t need to be complicated, extravagant, or time-consuming.

Here are a few self-care tips that you can use this summer to make sure your health doesn’t fall by the wayside.

Plan a Staycation

If you have a weekend to spare, think about planning a staycation. If you live in the city, taking a short drive to somewhere a little more rural and quaint can be more relaxing than you’d think. You can rent a cottage, stay at a B&B, or even take a day trip to the destination of your choice. Depending on where you’re headed, there might be some fun activities like a wine tour you can plan out.

Whether you go with your significant other or a group of friends, you can use this time to recharge, and you’ll return to your everyday life revitalized and ready to take on anything that’s thrown your way.

Splurge on Yourself

This option will likely only feel like self-care if you don’t mind spending a few bucks. Depending on what you’re into, you can splurge on any number of things — just remember that whatever you purchase, it should be something that makes you happy. Whether that means spending a little extra on some new gym clothes, purchasing some new home decor, or even treating yourself to a trip to the salon, it’s totally up to you.

You may want to go out for a fancy dinner with your significant other, or plan a date night to reconnect with your partner. Choose something that you know will help you recharge, and make you feel great about yourself.

Get Some Vitamin D

It’s summer, so it’s the perfect time to get out of the house and take in some rays. Plan a beach day with your family or friends, and set up camp for the day. You can have a picnic and spend the entire day outdoors. Living in Canada, we get to experience all four seasons, but we know that half the year is basically winter here — so don’t miss your chance while the sun is still out and about.

If a full day with family and friends doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, go ahead and plan a solo beach day. There’s nothing wrong with spending the day digging your heels into the sand, reading your favourite book, and listening to the waves crash against the shore for a day.

Decorate your Space

Sprucing up your home’s decor for the season can be soothing in more ways than one. Some enjoy interior decorating, and the act itself can be considered self-care if this is the case for you. If you’re not keen on decorating, simply surround yourself with things that you like. Your home doesn’t have to be a showpiece if you don’t want it to be; having mismatched blankets and pillows, funky wall tapestries, and your favourite plants around your home can help make your house feel like a home. When you’re surrounded by things that make you feel comfortable, you’ll have a sense of inner peace.

If you’re not ready to go on an all-out redecorating spree, stick to just one room. Whether it’s your bedroom, office, or den, make one space in your home yours. If you’re having a bad day, retreating to this space and surrounding yourself with the things that make you comfortable and happy will put you at ease.

Nourish Yourself

This summer, focus on some fresh eats to help you feel your best. Eating comfort food is a nice treat sometimes, but it’s important to keep your health in check, especially when it comes to self-care. Make a trip to your local farmer’s market to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables, and spend some time making yourself a meal. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it can become routine to throw together any old thing you have in the kitchen and call it dinner. Set aside some time for yourself to make a proper meal, with fresh ingredients — your body will thank you for it.

There are a ton of ways that you can indulge in self-care this summer. As this non-exhaustive list shows, you don’t always have to spend a ton or dedicate an entire week, or even day to get your dose of self-care. The key is to find what works for you and really indulge in the little things that make you happy.
