Ready For Golf Season? Your Body Might Not Be.

With the weather warming up, many people are eager to dust off their golf clubs and hit the green. However, golf can be incredibly hard on your body. Even if you do everything correctly, golf can take its toll. Take care of your body this spring and summer with sport specific physiotherapy and chiropractic services from PhysioMed.

The golf swing, and the hunched-over putting stance many golfers use, puts great stress on the golfer’s back, so it’s no surprise back pain is the most common problem for golfers. Back pain in golfers might be mechanical or disc-related, arthritis-related, or caused by a stress fracture, among other possible causes. Proper warm-up and stretching is important to decrease the chances of injury. Gradual increase in length and intensity of play should be exercised as the season progresses.

Do:

  • Use proper back mechanics when lifting your bag.
  • Bend through the knees (squat) when retrieving the ball.
  • Consider switching to a putter with a longer shaft.
  • Slow down the backswing to minimize rotational stress on the lower back at the top of the backswing.
  • Adopt a big shoulder and hip turn on the backswing (classic swing technique).
  • Make sure body weight is properly shifted to the right foot during the backswing, and that the arms and shoulders are kept within the plane of the swing at the top of the backswing.

Don’t:

  • Place the feet too far apart at the address phase (this limits the hip turn later in the swing and increases stress on the lower back).
  • Hyperextend the spine on the follow-through, but rather utilize the relaxed upright “I” position (classic swing technique).

For most golfers, the hand and/or wrist is the third most common body region injured, after the back and elbow. The wrist is injured three times more frequently than the hand. In golf, the action of the wrist is important for the ?snap? of the shot in long shots, and the precision ?feel? in short shots. Golfers who lack strength in their forearms are more prone to wrist and hand injuries. The leading wrist/hand is most at risk. Injuries result either gradually from overuse, or from a traumatic blow causing sprains or fractures. Tennis elbow is an inflammation, soreness, or pain on the outside of the upper arm near the elbow. Golfer’s elbow is an inflammation, soreness or pain on the inside of the upper arm near the elbow. Tennis elbow is actually more common among golfers than golfer’s elbow.

Add Physiotherapy To Your Sports Injury Prevention Strategy

Every Olympic team has their own physiotherapists that travel with them when they compete and while they train. For athletes to continue to have a full range motion, prevent injuries and have the power to win gold medals, they need to be treated by physiotherapists to prevent or treat injuries and reduce recovery time. Time spent hurt is time lost for training and can make it difficult to get back to the same fitness level after a period of rest. The scarred tissue and nerve damage can lead to pain even after full recovery.

That’s why it’s important to make regular appointments with your physiotherapist to maintain the health and prevent further damage. Physiotherapists focus on evaluating, restoring and maintaining physical function and mobility. Athletes are always moving and pushing their limits. All this stress and exhaustion can take a toll on your health. Many athletes suffer from pain whether it’s from ?wear and tear? or a sports related injury. A physiotherapist can offer athletic injury management, including acute care, treatment and rehabilitation and education to prevent further injury and pain.

Additionally, physiotherapists treat patients differently depending on which sport they play or how they train. With track and field, rehabilitation can be integrated into training and can ensure that the athlete returns to competitions faster. Some common conditions that runners suffer from include shin splits, planar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis and anterior knee pain. Swimmers can also suffer injures including: rotator cuff injury, back pain including spondylothesis and instability, neck pain, golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow. Regardless of the sport you play or your level of fitness, physiotherapy maximizes your potential for success.

Treatments for athletes can include movement control, exercise functional rehabilitation and mobilizations. Pushing your body to its limits puts a lot of stress and pressure on your muscles and joints. To prevent injury and ensure you’re at peak physical form in competitions, regular visits to a physiotherapist are essential. An athletes’ body is like a well used machine, it runs it’s best when maintained properly.

The pain and aches of training are one of the many challenges competitive athletes can overcome through physiotherapy. However, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from this effective form of treatment. Whether you have been inactive for some time and trying to get back into shape or determined to achieve the impossible, physiotherapy will assist you in obtaining your objectives.

So, if you compete in any sports and would like to fully condition yourself or would like to discuss preventative physiotherapy for other possibilities, then be sure to visit us here at Physiomed. Being 100% ready for whatever comes your way will help you perform your best.

Prevent Injuries When Running This Season

With cooler weather, crisp air, and a panorama of colours to view as leaves change from bright greens to vibrant browns, oranges and reds, the call for feet on pavement and trail is stronger than ever. Running is one of the best ways to keep fit, tone up and increase your cardiovascular strength, but as such a high impact activity it can lead to a variety of injuries. Below are a few tips to prevent injuries and keep you on your feet.

Know your limits

When endorphins are pumping through your blood it’s hard not to give your all and push yourself to the limit, but pushing yourself too far can lead to an injury. The majority of running injuries are due to pushing yourself too hard, running too fast and too far. When adding kilometres or speed it’s important to ease into it and listen to your body.

Stretch it out

That tightness behind your legs and in your front shin can limit your ability to tackle a run and if pushed can result in injury. It’s important to stretch and stretch well to prevent running injuries. Fluid stretches, involving stretching muscles through movement, are key prior to starting out on your run. Butt kicks, walking lunges, and knee raises will warm up the body and loosen up the muscles. Static stretching should be done only after your run when your muscles are already pliable.

Get the right running shoes

The tools of your activity are as important as form and prevention. Improper footwear can aggravate existing problem and worn down shoes without enough cushioning can increase your risk of injury. The guidelines for footwear recommend that you replace your running shoes every 1000kms. Your shoe should also be tailored for the type of running you do. Road runners shouldn’t be wearing trail running shoes and vice versa.

Develop a treatment plan

When an injury happens many brush it off believing that time and rest will take care of it. In some cases rest will heal the injury but others require guidance of a registered physiotherapist. To ensure you’re giving your injury the proper treatment it’s always good to seek out a consultation. A registered physiotherapist can provide advice on how to repair the injury as well as how to prevent future injuries.
