Our hips are designed to allow for a high degree of flexibility and a wide range of motion in order to support, among other things, those activities that involve bending and lifting. However, all too often, whether due to a tightening of our hips or simply a lack of awareness, we tend to bend from the middle of our back rather than our hips. This causes a straining of the lower back and, ultimately, a significant amount of pain.
In the following videos, Dr. Jason Lemieux of Physiomed Oakville demonstrates how use the deadlift technique through a series of progressions to maximize the inherent flexibility in our hips and avoid lower back pain when performing everyday tasks such as bending and lifting:
