Over the last 20 years, the number of Canadians being treated for kidney failure has tripled. Currently, an estimated 2.6 million Canadians have, or are at risk for, kidney disease and those with diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease or those 60 years of age or older have a higher risk than most. Our kidneys play a very important role. They filter blood, approximately 180 litres each day, in order to produce urine, which allows for the elimination of waste. They also keep blood composition stable, control the production of red blood cells, release hormones that regulate blood pressure, produce an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong bones, balance the fluids in your body and more.
