Well, here we are at the start of another new year, first I would like to wish a very happy New Year to our patients, their families and anyone else watching this video right now.
You know at this time of year so many of us are focused on achieving our New Year's resolutions and for many of us this includes getting healthier. While I've often talked about how best to achieve your resolutions. Today I want to revisit a topic I touched on in a previous post, which is what does getting healthier really mean and how do we do it?
At Physiomed, we define healthier as the balance of the mind, body and spirit and we suggest the following seven steps:
- Step one, set yearly monthly and daily intentions, this includes setting personal career health and social goals. Jot down this big picture stuff, then, after dreaming big on your annual goals, move on to the month by month changes you want to make. You can revisit these each month, finally make a list of daily changes you will make to ensure these goals are on track, make sure to check back and read these intentions every morning before starting the day. Setting intentions can be fun inspiring and motivating.
- Step two, take the minimalism challenge minimalism is gaining momentum, people are recognizing that they feel better with less, so take on the 30 day minimalism challenge. On day one throw away or donate one thing you own, on day two throw away two things, continue throwing away or donating consecutively as the month goes on, by day 30, you will seriously feel the struggle to cleanse your stuff but just wait and see how much better you feel without that cluttered drawer or overflowing closet.
- Step three, reset your approach to dieting and think gut health. Short-term, extreme, or restrictive diets don't produce long-term results. The key is to take a more holistic, longer term approach, but more on that in a minute. When it comes to gut health the key here is improving the efficiency of your digestive system and bolstering your immune system. This means enhancing your diet with probiotics, prebiotics and avoiding antibiotics, of course unless prescribed. This includes the food for your gut flora, like yogurt, bananas, oatmeal and leafy green.
- Step four, take the five-step diet overhaul, triple your veggies, cut sugar, drink more water, eat no processed food and shop the perimeter at the supermarket, these simple modifications to your diet will create the perfect opportunity to transform your long-term health.
- Step five, get active every day! Logging an hour a day at the gym is hard for even the most forgiving schedules, this year give yourself a manageable goal. You're going to get up and move every day, this can range from low intensity to high intensity activity. Here are a few suggestions: go for a nature walk, engage in a morning yoga routine, try a kickboxing class, visit the community center for a swim, read a book while running on the treadmill or take mini walks between work. It's helpful to find something you physically and mentally enjoy participating in, then act as though you are rewarding yourself with this activity.
- Step six. Consider meditation. Start off by setting aside ten to fifteen minutes each day to sit quietly without your phone and breathe. Just a few minutes can improve focus, reduce stress, ease anxiety and improve memory. Everyone meditates differently so do what works for you.
- Our final step is to get help as you need for each of the areas you want to focus on this year. One of the most exciting things about the new year is the possibility for a new beginning but every day is a new day, so start today and make your commitment to getting healthier.
