There was a point in time when wellness, diet, and gym memberships only really picked up as the result of a New Year’s resolution. Then there was the infomercial boom preaching 5 minute abs, thigh tighteners, and booty blasters.

In today’s digital age, it seems everyone in the health and wellness space has a different opinion on how to build the right balance between nutrition and exercise. Some experts swear by weightlifting, while others prefer high intensity interval training (HIIT). However, we’re all unique and how we exercise should be unique to our bodies and goals.

Preventive care is the most important step you can take to manage your health. Preventive care focuses on maintaining your health, and establishing your baseline health status.This may include immunizations, vaccines, physical evaluations, lab work, x-rays, medically appropriate health screenings and nutritional-counselling.

When you aren’t at the gym or being active, you need to watch your diet, right? But which diet is the best? There’s paleo, keto, vegan, and the “apple diet”. Sure many of these diets are being researched and shown to improve overall health, but where is the line drawn between proven and fad?

Here’s the cold, hard, truth: Wellness is one of the world’s fastest growing markets. Between 2013 and 2015 the global wellness industry grew by almost 11% to $3.72 trillion. This happened while the worldwide economy dipped almost 4%.

Some people are referring to this movement as the “Well Economy”. We have more options (and information) than ever when it comes to living healthy. We can track our sleep patterns. We can take wellness retreats in the jungle’s of Bali. Employers are providing employees with wellness funds as well as corporate wellness programs are organised.

It’s all pretty awesome… But where do you start?

To help guide you on your path to wellness, we reached out to 50 health and wellness professionals and influencers (professors, physiotherapists, athletes, trainers, and even an olympian) and asked them these three simple questions:

People seem to always resort to being on their phones as soon as they "aren't doing anything". I think a lack of just sitting, thinking, looking out the window, doing nothing... is killing our creativity and our spirit. It's definitely killing eye contact.

Join the "Quantified Self" revolution. Self monitoring = self awareness = a pathway to better health.

Connecting to mobile health takes the guesswork out of fitness, replacing infrequent monitoring with continuous wellness monitoring that can detect health issues early and increase healthy lifestyle choices.

There is too much focus on medical intervention, and not enough focus on preventative lifestyles. Increasingly, aging in Canada is an alienating experience. We need to create stronger communities to support each other. It also frustrates me that so many corporations do not place a focus on wellness, and have their employees stressed out, sitting at desks for the majority of their day. It’s like the Dalai Llama said, “People sacrifice their health for wealth, and then sacrifice their wealth for health.” If we could find more sustainable ways of work that didn’t burn out our communities, that would make me very happy.
